Sarawak Aims To Export RM6 Billion Worth Of Wood Furniture By 2030: Premier

KUCHING, Mon: Sarawak aimed to increase exports of wooden furniture to RM6 billion by 2030, the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Johari bin Tun Abang Openg said today.

He said the target was based on 75 per cent of the targeted total exports of wood products worth RM8 billion.

Sarawak's export value for wood-based products currently stands at RM3.1 billion and only RM44 million or about 1.5 percent of that was furniture products.

"This is the dream and we need to improve the technology and creativity level of our human capital. If other countries can do it, I’m sure our young designers can do it. But we must have a good road map in order to achieve that objective," he pointed out.

He said this at the opening ceremony of Sarawak Design Week 2023 held at the Borneo Convention Center Kuching (BCCK), here.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Zohari also said Sarawak government was planning  to develop a furniture park in the state that would  be equipped with digital facilities as part of the road map to realise the target.

He said that digitization would enable small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to take advantage of technology to further enhance the value of their products.

"(With digitalisation) You can simulate your design at the same time you can simulate certain data that is needed in producing the design," he added.

Later, the Premier and other invited guests also witnessed the exchanges of Memoranda of Understanding between SARADEC and Sarawak College of Technology (UTS), Miri Community College, Sarawak Timber Association (STA) and Korean Furniture Association (KOFA).-Sarawakku
